I had been touring around the country for a few years. I had helped catch a murderer while I was tied up with rope. I had helped 1200 people get out of a burning building while I was tied up with rope and survived many grueling escape challenges trying to keep my reward which now had risen to $100,000.00 when I got the call from Associated Television letting me know I had won Best Escape Artist and I needed to get down to Universal Studios in Florida to tape a one of a kind death challenge.
I told the Director who is also the Producer and his wife that I want to add more to the escape than what we planned. I wanted to do it upside down and with the addition of a heavy 65-pound civil war ball and chain locked to my neck! They said no way, I said way! lol.
We get down to the shoot, Bernie Kopel, Doc from the show Love Boat is my host. We walked him thru it and he goes what? what? he was nervous.
The Director pulled me aside. He said he knows magic and if I feel anything is wrong or, I’m in trouble signal him and the crew and we will re-do it, it’s not worth injury or death. I said don’t worry about it I’m the Griff.
He said oh man, well still signal if something goes south...
Let me tell you, hanging upside down with cuffs behind your back, suspended by your ankles, and weighted down with a ball and chain around your neck is a most unusual feeling. I LOVE WHAT I DO!!!
